Adult Literacy and Numeracy: A Learner Centred Dialogue

Cross-sector collaboration has been highlighted as one of the strengths of this project. In order to maintain these active links between stakeholders and advisory group members a workshop was designed to report on the progress of the wider project and facilitate talks on learner voice. The workshop was also designed to affirm the relationships and perspectives created through the policy intervention landscape project.  Two of the partners in this project hosted the first workshop designed to facilitate dialogue between the research team, the policy sector and providers of adult L+N on the 23rd-24th of September 2022.

Our thanks to BusinessNZ in Wellington and Auckland Council for hosting the two in-person events and to those participants who joined us online.  The workshop started with broad overview of the wider project and then summaries of the progress with the various strands of qualitative work being undertaken.  A number of providers then shared their experiences and understanding of learners to help us further develop a truly learner centred model of adult L+N.  The final presentations focused on the policy context with commentary from Ako Aotearoa and the Ministry of Education.

Throughout the workshop we also sought views from the participant on our initial model of a learner centered framework for the policy intervention landscape. These views will be drawn on and inform the next part of the literacy landscape project that will investigate culturally responsive models. It was both exciting and re-assuring to the research project team members that everyone was essentially on the same page in terms of prioritising learners and responding to the literacy and numeracy issues identified in the PIACC survey results.
